Artist Statement

My portfolio has different types of art and media. Most of the artwork in my portfolio done with softer pastel colors. I also tend to use a lot of oil paint and pastel pencils, although I have been attempting to explore other media.
Most of my pieces of art focus on the idea of masked identity and identity in general. I also like to focus on the perspectives of people. This year in my Studio Art V class I made a concentration that focused on traveling and perspective. In my AP class I created another concentration where I instead focused on masked identity and the feelings that people keep hidden from others. I decided to use this concept because I have noticed how much teenagers struggle to find their own identity as they grow up. They also tend to pretend to be someone else in order to fit in. I created a lot of pieces of masks, portraits, and abstract pieces that are meant to portray the feelings felt inside. I also took some photographs which was a new medium for me. Besides my concentration I created a lot of other pieces. They were a mix of portraits, landscapes, animals, and abstract pieces. I tend to try to create all different types of pieces as a way from keeping myself interested. Also I like having a well rounded portfolio because I hope it will help me grow as an artist. .
In the future, I want to continue to become a more well rounded artist. I want to work more on perspective, depth, and figures. At Stonehill College I want to major in either marketing or communications, minor in art, and travel by studying abroad. Also, I hope that when I go into the workforce I can do something involving both art and business.

Studio Art V
Over the summer I was given the opportunity to visit about ten cities in Europe located in the countries of Italy, Spain, and France. This family trip fueled my desire to continue traveling throughout the rest of my life. That is the reason that I decided to explore the theme of traveling in my concentration. I believe traveling gives people the opportunity to look at the world and their life from a different perspective, and I figured it would be a great concept to explore. I chose to make each in three sections. Each piece represents its own city. The outside frame is made up of a colorful collage from a magazine from the country represented. The middle section is a black and white ink made map, representing where the city is in this giant world. Then the final smallest section is a polaroid picture from my actual trip. I chose to make all these sections because I felt that the polaroid showed how the concentration connected to my life, that the map would visually display where the country is, and that the colorful collage would show all the differences and connections that there are between the countries in the world.
Originally instead of a map, I intended to draw a popular landmark, but I then decided that it was not necessary as the polaroid would show that part of the city. I also decided to use ink to draw the map because it is a medium I have never used before. I hope that my pieces will show that even though countries across the world have different values, and the people their have a different way of life, we can still connect them all. While on my trip to Europe I was shown a different way of life and it caused me to be able to look at my life with a different perspective. I believe that life is all about your perspective so I normally tend to explore this through my artwork. I explore this idea throughout my concentration even if it is not the main theme. When I decided to explore the theme of travel for my concentrations, I also decided to attempt to use mediums I have not used before, such as polaroids, ink, and collage. I did this because it would be a way for me to see art from a new perspective. I am happy that I chose to explore another side of art but I do not necessarily think I will stick to those mediums after this project is completed.
In the future, I want to continue to become a more well rounded artist. I want to work more on perspective, depth, and figures. At Stonehill College I want to major in either marketing or communications, minor in art, and of course travel by studying abroad. Also, I hope that when I go into the workforce I can do something involving both art and business.
